Hablemos un poco sobre… ¡cine!
– ¡Hola! Me llamo Susana. ¿Y tú? ¿Cómo te llamas? – Hello! My name is Susana. And you? What is your name?
- (Yo) me llamo Rafa. Encantado. – My name is Rafa. Nice to meet you. / Pleased to meet you.
– Lo mismo digo. Me encanta ir al cine. ¿Y a ti? ¿Te gusta ir al cine? – Nice to meet you too. I love to go to the cinema. What about you? Do you like to go to the cinema?
- A mí también me gusta ir al cine. – I also like to go to the cinema.
-Susana: ¡Encantada de conocerte! (mujer) – Nice to meet you!
-Alumno/a: ¡Yo también! / Lo mismo digo. – Nice to meet you too!
-Rafa: ¡Encantado de conocerte! (hombre) – Nice to meet you!
-Alumno/a: ¡Yo también! / Lo mismo digo. – Nice to meet you too!
Can I drop the “yo” in the previous sentence? Yes, you can because the endings of Spanish verbs indicate who the subject of an action is, you can often drop the subject pronoun (yo, tú, nosotros, etc). Many Spanish speakers rarely use personal pronouns, although this varies from country to country. For example, in the sentence Hablo español. (I speak Spanish.), the pronoun yo isn’t really necessary. The -o ending tells you who the subject of the verb is, “yo”.

- A mí también. Me encanta Pretty Woman. Es mi película preferida. – Me too. (So do I). I love Pretty Woman. It’s my favourite movie.
- A mí no. (Yo) prefiero las películas de acción. ¿Te gustan las películas de acción? – I don’t. I prefer action movies. Do you like action movies?
– ¿Te apetece ir al cine a ver la última película de Julia Roberts y George Clooney, Ticket to Paradise? – Do you feel like going to the cinema to see the latest film by Julia Roberts and George Clooney, Ticket to Paradise?
- Sí, me encantaría. ¿A qué hora la ponen? – Yes, I’d love to. What time do they put it on?
– Hay una sesión a las 5 y otra a las 7. – There is a session at 5pm and another at 7pm.
- Prefiero ir a la sesión de las 7. ¿Te va bien? – I prefer to go to the 7 o’clock session. Does it suit you?
– Sí, estupendo. Nos vemos a las 6:45 en las taquillas para comprar la entrada. – Yes, great! See you at 6:45pm at the box office to buy our tickets.
